Multidisciplinary Care

When treating medically complicated pregnancies, our physicians coordinate the care of patients with University of Louisville specialists in hematology, oncology, pulmonary care, cardiology, gastroenterology and other specialized fields.

Maternal Fetal Medicine

The Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine specializes in the care and treatment of high-risk pregnancies. We provide complete obstetric care throughout your pregnancy, delivery and postpartum period or work in consultation with your primary care obstetrician. Our referral area includes Central and Western Kentucky and Southern Indiana.

A general obstetrician can care for most pregnancies, but sometimes there are potential complications that could affect the mother, the baby, or both. Complications can exist before the mother becomes pregnant (e.g., heart disease or diabetes) or they can arise during pregnancy. Our Maternal Fetal Medicine physicians specialize in the following:

• Heart disease
• Cervical insufficiency (weakened cervix)
• High blood pressure (hypertension)
• Preeclampsia (toxemia)
• Placental problems
• Multiple birth (twins, triplets or more)
• Diabetes or other endocrine disorders
• Infectious diseases
• Kidney or gastrointestinal disease
• Premature rupture of membranes
• History of pre-term labor and delivery
• History of miscarriage
• Birth defects (congenital abnormalities)
• Pregnancy after 40 years of age
