Egg Donor Recipient
Some women either cannot produce eggs or produce eggs of poor quality because of age or a condition such as premature ovarian failure. Other women have genetic conditions that they do not wish to pass on to a child. Such women are candidates for our egg donor program. To be considered as a recipient for donor eggs, a woman must have a normal uterus and be 50 years old or younger.
University OB-GYN offers an egg donor program to match a couple to an anonymous donor. Anonymous donors are not allowed to meet recipients or to know whether a pregnancy occurred.
Some couples prefer a known donor, perhaps a relative or friend. A known donor must undergo screening and we recommend that a legal contract be drawn up by a lawyer before proceeding.
All recipients over the age of 40 must be screened for conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes that might complicate a pregnancy. Both partners must have blood screening. The male partner must also undergo semen analysis.
On the day of the donor's egg retrieval, the male partner provides a semen sample that will be prepared in a laboratory and used to fertilize the donated egg. On day 3, embryos are transferred to the recipient. After two weeks, pregnancy testing can be done.
